Colorado wines are a bit higher in acid compared to the California wines that most US wine drinkers are most familiar with. They are more like the wines from the central mountainous European regions, like Austria and northern Italy. Colorado's most widely planted grape is the merlot, followed by riesling, cabernet sauvignon, syrah and chardonnay. Other varietals such as viognier, gewürztraminer, pinot noir and cabernet franc are beginning to show great promise.
